If your knee aches every time you get up from a chair, or the bottom of your heel screams the moment your foot hits the floor in the morning, you’re not imagining it and you’re not just “getting older.” These are two of the most common causes of long-term joint and foot pain, osteoarthritis of the knee and plantar fasciitis, and both have a lot more treatment options today than most people realize.

Osteoarthritis of the Knee: Why It Happens

Your knee joint is cushioned by cartilage, a smooth, rubbery tissue that lets the bones glide against each other without friction. Osteoarthritis develops when that cartilage gradually wears down. Plantar fasciitis develops when that tissue is overstretched or overused, leading to small tears and inflammation near where it attaches to the heel bone. Some people also develop a bony growth on the heel bone alongside plantar fasciitis, sometimes called a calcaneal spur. <cite index=”23-3″>Heel spurs are often wrongly assumed to be the sole cause of heel pain. They’re common but are really just the bone’s response to pulling forces from the plantar fascia and other foot muscles, and often don’t cause pain on their own.</cite>

Why These Conditions Need More Than Rest
